Terry Butcher is SJA World Cup lunch guest – Jun 8

The SJA is delighted to announce that Terry Butcher, the former England football captain, will be our guest for a special World Cup lunch in Fleet Street on Tuesday, June 8 – the week that the tournament begins in South Africa.

Terry is the last England captain to have led his side as far as the semi-finals of the World Cup, and he has since acquired 20 years’ experience on the inside of British and international football. He offers great insights into the prospects for the 2010 World Cup.

A genuine England football legend as a result of his brave leadership of the team at Italia ’90, where only a penalty shoot-out denied his side a place in the final, Butcher won a total of 77 caps with his country in a 10-year international career.

Since the end of his playing career, the former Ipswich and Rangers centre half has managed at two of his former clubs, Sunderland and Coventry. He has continued his coaching career in Scotland, at Motherwell and with the Scottish national side, before overseeing Inverness Caledonian Thistle’s immediate return to the Scottish Premier League in his first full season in charge.

He is also an in-demand and outspoken pundit on the game, working with BBC Radio 5Live and on Channel 5’s UEFA Cup coverage, as well as writing regular columns for the Sunday Mirror.

As is usual at SJA lunches, our guest of honour is prepared to answer questions from the floor, although we expect attendees to respect his wishes if he wishes to make any “off the record” remarks.
