Paul McCarthy has been signed in a coup by the News of the World as the biggest selling Sunday paper’s new sports editor, to replace Mike Dunn.
McCarthy, who started his career at the South London Press, has been chief sports columnist at The People for seven years. He was chief football writer for the News of the World before joining the Daily Express in 1996.
Dunn was appointed as sports editor at The Sun last month.
In recent years, he has been a regular football pundit for BSkyB.
He said: “This is a huge and incredibly exciting challenge. The reputation of the News of the World is immense and I’m very much aware of maintaining the high standards set by Mike Dunn and the rest of the sports desk team. It is a privilege to be given this opportunity.â€
News of the World editor Colin Myler added: “Paul has one of the most respected reputations in sports journalism. His contacts book is unrivalled. Everybody knows him and everybody likes him. However, the News of the World might change that.â€
