Seconds out, round 100 for Boxing News

Boxing News reaches its 100th anniversary this month.

Since launching in 1909 and after publishing more than 5,000 issues, Boxing News remains the most respected, loved and at times controversial magazine in the market.

To celebrate 100 years in print, the September 11 issue carries an anniversary magazine that includes the 100 most extraordinary moments in boxing plus the BN team’s choices for a range of Top 10s from knockouts to outrageous moments to promoters and biggest flops.

BN also has plans to launch a bookazine which will feature a comprehensive guide to the top boxers,
fights and defining moments over the last century of boxing. This will hit the newsstands in November.

Having worked on Boxing News for the last 22 years, editor Claude Abrams has been a key influence in guiding the magazine’s development, taking it from broadsheet format to today’s 48-page weekly magazine.

Through this, Boxing News has achieved strong circulation growth for a number of years and also been able to publish a number of spin-off magazines, more recently with the launch of Fighting Fit.

Speaking about the magazine’s centenary, Claude said, “It’s a testament to the quality and strength of the publication as well as its committed readership to reach such an impressive milestone. Times have altered dramatically since the first issue was published, but the magazine continues to retain the core values that made it such an overwhelming success a century ago and that’s been a secret to its longevity.”

Launched as, simply, Boxing, the magazine has had a colourful history, passing through the struggles of the 1920s depression and the storms of two World Wars.

“Boxing News was there long before the internet sites and it’ll be there long after those sites have crashed,” promoter Frank Maloney said. “The weekends wouldn’t be the same without it.”
