July 2009: Another record month for SJA’s website

sportsjournalist.co.uk broke all records for its site traffic in July 2009, even beating the Olympian heights reached during last year’s Beijing Games in August 2008, and not a rubberised go-faster swimsuit in sight.

By Thursday July 30, with a full 24 hours of the calendar month remaining, the Sports Journalists’ Association’s website had attracted more than 664,000 hits during the month of July, an average of more than 21,000 per day – beating the site’s previous traffic record of 645,000 (20,800 per day average) set in August 2008 during the Beijing Games.

According to independently verified traffic statistics, in July 2009, sportsjournalists.co.uk received more than 45,000 unique visits.

The website traffic in July in part reflects the number of new articles posted to the site during the month – more than 70, including regular contributions from members such as Norman Giller, Philip Barker and Anton Rippon.

The month also saw the start of the Ashes Test cricket series between Australia and England, and with it SJA sponsor Sky Bet’s Media Challenge, and the three-years-and-counting mark in the build-up to the London Olympics, and is indicative of growing interest in the SJA’s activities in the build-up to the 2012 Games.

It means that sportsjournalists.co.uk’s three busiest months for website visitors have occured within in the past 12 months – August 2008, March 2009 – when traffic spikes were hit as SJA members and other visitors came to the website for news of the SJA’s British Sports Journalism Awards – and now July 2009.

sportsjournalists.co.uk now also includes an improved news service, with links to up to 20 news stories on sports journalism, sports journalists and related topics, drawn from a range of newspapers, broadcasters and other websites, and available on every news page of the SJA website.

AUGUST 1 UPDATE: Final site traffic figures for July 2009 are: 686,391 hits (averaging 22,141 per day); 47,017 unique visits (average: 1,516 per day).

In total, the SJA website has had 6.4 million hits in the 12 months, August 2008 to July 2009.

â–¡ Sky Bet is the SJA’s newest partner, the sponsorship being announced in October 2008.

Together with the SJA’s other lead sponsor, UK Sport, both partners support our two prestigious annual awards events, including the Sky Bet sports betting writer of the year at the SJA’s British Sports Journalism Awards.

The 61st annual SJA British Sports Awards will be staged at The Brewery, in London, on December 9 2009.
