Sports editor job may go in Edinburgh merger

Senior jobs on the sports desks at The Scotsman and Scotland on Sunday seem likely to be merged out of existence.

In a memo to staff at the Edinburgh-based titles on Friday, managing director Michael Johnston said the posts of features editor, senior assistant editor and associate editor at The Scotsman would be no longer required. In their place, there will be an assistant editor for both The Scotsman and Scotland on Sunday, with features rolled into the news function.

The move towards a seven-day operation appears to place at least one sports editor’s job at risk, as owners Johnston Press are looking to have one person in charge of each of the following content areas across the two titles: news, sport, business, politics, arts and magazines.

The long-standing sports editor for the Scotsman is Donald Walker; for Scotland on Sunday, it’s Graham Bean.

Earlier this month, it was announced The Scotsman and Scotland on Sunday newspapers are looking to cut around 25 jobs – ideally through voluntary redundancy – following a merging of their productions into a “seven day operation”.
