Listings mag calls time out on sports editor

Time Out, the London-based listings magazine, is dispensing with the role of sports editor after more than 30 years.

SJA member Andrew Shields, who has held the position of sport and fitness editor since 1991, has been made redundant, with the magazine opting not to cover the subjects in future.

Time Out‘s sports listings tradition dates back to 1973, when its first sports editor was Peter Ball, Eamon Dunphy’s collaborator on Only a Game, still regarded as one of the finest football books ever written. Ball later worked as football correspondent at the short-lived London Daily News and then at The Times.

Other notables to have filled the Time Out sports editor’s chair include SJA members Pat Butcher and Peter Nichols.

For Shields, the loss of his role is cushioned somewhat because he has found himself a job at Canary Wharf, working for LOCOG as editorial services manager on a one-year contract.
