Book now for 60th Sports Awards

Tickets are on sale now for the SJA’s 60th anniversary Sports Awards, where the tremendous successes in British sport in 2008 will be celebrated, culminating in the announcement of the 2008 Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year.

The awards lunch will be staged on November 26, at The Brewery in Chiswell Street, London.

The SJA’s awards are the longest-established sports awards in Britain, dating back to the founding of what was then the Sports Writers’ Association in 1948. Past winners have included Roger Bannister, Anita Lonsbrough, Mary Rand, Tony Jacklin, Ann Jones, Jackie Stewart, Daley Thompson, Princess Anne, Nick Faldo, Steve Redgrave, Laura Davies, David Beckham, Paula Radcliffe and Jonny Wilkinson.

Last year’s winners were Formula 1 star Lewis Hamilton and triple cycling world champion Victoria Pendleton.

Selected by a ballot of the SJA membership, the Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year are widely regarded as the definitive award of their type, chosen by the people who work closest to the sports throughout the year, the sports writers, columnists, photographers and broadcasters.

All Britain’s Olympic medallists in Beijing have been invited to attend the awards lunch, as have all the Association’s past chairmen, to help celebrate 60 years of working to enhance the status of sports journalism in Britain.

There will be special guests with strong links to the 1948 London Olympics, and invitations have also been sent to a broad selection of past Sportsmen and Sportswomen from each decade of the SJA’s existence, as well as leading figures from the worlds of politics and show business at this gala occasion.

Tickets are priced at £120, which includes a pre-lunch drinks reception, three-course lunch and half a bottle of wine per person. As one of the special benefits of membership, fully paid-up SJA members can obtain a pair of tickets for just £95 each.

Given the tremendous success of Britain’s team at the Beijing Olympics, with 19 gold medals, demand for tickets is expected to eclipse all past awards events and members are recommended to book early to ensure that they do not miss out.
