When taken ill earlier this year, Donald went into a nursing home in Tavistock, and according to his grandson, BBC sports journalist Anthony Husband, he died peacefully in his sleep yesterday.

As yet there are no funeral details, beyond that it will be held in the village of Whitchurch, near Plymouth.

Don retired from the Daily Telegraph in the summer of 1987 – his last Cup final was Coventry’s win over Tottenham. He continued to write a column for the paper until the early 1990s, before indulging in his other passion outside of sport- walking.

His wife Betty died a couple of years ago, so he leaves two daughters, Jill and Isabelle, and grandsons Anthony, Dominic and a granddaughter, Sophie.

The SJA sends its deepest condolences to Donald’s family and friends.
