University courses

Here is our latest selection of 209 undergraduate and 124 postgraduate courses for those considering a higher education qualification ahead of a possible career in sports journalism.

Our listings encompass the full range of potential journalistic or media study, from more practical journalism degrees specialising in print, broadcast and multimedia through to theoretical programmes studying the history and development of journalism, as well as less tailored options such as communications or creative writing.

However, don’t think a degree in journalism is the only way into the industry. Some argue that you’re better off getting as good a degree as you can from as good an institution as you can, regardless of discipline, while there are also opportunities for journalistic study away from higher education that can be found in our Other Courses section.

As a guide, accreditation from the NCTJ, BJTC or PTC – historically the industry standards for newspapers, broadcasters and magazines respectively – is worth looking out for, while particularly at postgraduate level, the courses at City and Cardiff University are very well respected within the industry.

If you are a course administrator who would like to see your course included on this listing, contact our listings editor for details of how you can be added to the list, and our special rates for an enhanced listing by e-mailing Steven Downes.

Sports Journalism is about more than just match reports. It's about exploring the stories behind the headlines and helping to bring sport to life. This course is for people who are passionate about sport and who want to help audiences understand what makes the industry tick.

The practical aspects of the degree will teach you key journalistic skills such as how to source, research and write sports stories and features, as well as the technical know-how to put together audio and video packages. There is a heavy emphasis on multi-platform delivery at Leeds Trinity as we embrace the impact of social media and technology on sports journalism.

But good practical skills are only part of the picture. The best journalists have a keen understanding of the environment in which they are working and our theory components will help you understand the context in which news is produced, as well as the ethical, political and social impacts of journalism on society.

Finally, sports-specific elements will develop your knowledge of how the business and practice of sport has developed, and the place it has in contemporary culture.

Crucially, our Centre for Journalism provides the opportunity for all students to obtain a professionally-accredited qualification by taking the Diploma exams set by the National Council for the Training of Journalists.

Our track record speaks for itself - our graduates grace the newsrooms and press offices of organisations around the country. Our staff are all experienced journalists with the skills and expertise to help you get the crucial advantage in your studies. With a news production project at the end of the first year and six-week industry placement in the second, we will provide you with strong practical and theoretical understanding, leaving you well-placed to develop your career.

A highly vocational award, this MA is designed for those who want to fast-track into a career in Sports Broadcast Journalism. This award has full accreditation by the Broadcast Journalism Training Council.

Staffordshire University enjoys strong links with the sports broadcast industry and the teaching staff on this award have many years experience of working in TV, radio and online journalism.

Study with us and you will learn how to write a sports package, how to self-shoot and edit a TV package, how to present on television and radio, and how to operate as a multimedia journalist. Working with our team of top journalists and academics, you'll learn how to report, how to interview, how to use a TV camera and how to produce and direct in a studio.

Our focus is on combining theory and practice within a lively and engaging atmosphere that replicates the real world of journalism. The award follows a programme of continuous assessment and requires you to complete a fully assessed work placement.

"Without studying the MA in Sports Broadcast Journalism at Staffordshire University, I wouldn't have had either the skills or confidence necessary to enter the media world. Straight out of the course, I was lucky enough to gain employment with Setanta Sports in their football production department and the camera, editing and analytical skills taught on the MA made the transition into the production discipline a smooth one.

"The presence of the MA on my CV opened a door at Sunderland Football Club where I produced all content for SAFC TV - a job that would not have been in my reach without the MA as far as qualification, experience and practical skills are concerned. I am now at Sky developing a new online TV project."

James Craggs, Sky Sports Production Journalist

If you're obsessed by sport, dream of getting access to the world's biggest sporting events or want to meet and speak to your sporting heroes then the MA Sports Journalism could be for you.

The MA Sports Journalism at the University of Lincoln offers students a multi-platform experience, meaning you will be trained in a range of media including television, radio, print and online. The skills you learn at Lincoln will equip you as a sports journalist to work across a number of outlets.

Graduates of the MA Sports Journalism at Lincoln have gone on to work at national and local newspapers, national and local broadcasters as well as TV producers and sports commentators.

As well as learning production techniques there are a number of academic modules including law, sports journalism and a professional placement module to help find your first job in sports journalism.

The MA Sports Journalism has attracted a number of guest speakers including internationally renowned sports photographer, Peter Robinson, the BBC's Director of the Olympics, Roger Mosey (an honorary doctor of the university), the Commissioning Editor of BBC Five Live Jonathan Wall and sports broadcaster John Inverdale to name but a few.

If you are just starting out in your university career then you may be interested in the BA (Hons) Journalism, which offers an in depth Level 3 module in sports journalism and is excellent preparation for the MA Sports Journalism.

One of the strengths of the MA Sports Journalism is the emphasis on getting students and graduates into work. There are opportunities to gain work experience at a number of media outlets including the BBC, the Lincolnshire Echo or why not present your own sports programme on the university based, community radio station Siren FM.
