The additional prizes on offer in the expanded Broadcasting category at the 2014 SJA British Sports Journalism Awards, sponsored by BT Sport, presented at the Grand Connaught Rooms in central London on March 23, proved to be a popular success – and not just for the winners.

For while the BBC featured prominently with prizes for its coverage of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games on television and on radio, and with individual broadcasters such as the widely admired boxing and athletics commentator Mike Costello and hugely popular Eleanor Oldroyd, there were opportunities for others to shine, too.

Two new sports documentary prizes were won by BT Sport, for their television re-telling of The Crazy Gang, while TalkSport picked up the radio documentary award for a programme fronted by Mark Saggers and Stan Collymore about dealing with mental health issues among leading sportspeople.
