Germans set-up fund after reporter’s death

VDS, the German sports journalists’ association, is to establish a special fund for the family of Wolfgang Jost, the 57-year old football journalist who died earlier this week following a road accident while he was in South Africa covering the Confederations Cup.

A statement from the VDS executive committee said that the fund will also help a journalist from Berlin who was also seriously injured in the accident.

Jost, who worked for SID, the German news agency, was travelling with three colleagues to the Spain-South Africa semi-final in Bloemfontein when the accident occurred last Wednesday. The third journalist in the vehicle has since returned home, having escaped without injury.

Danny Jordaan, head of the 2010 World Cup organising committee, described the incident as “an unfortunate accident”.
