Croham Hurst Golf Club, within a decent 1-wood drive of The City – well, of Croydon at least – is to be the venue of the SJA’s 2014 Spring Golf Day on Monday April 14.
SJA members of all golfing standards and non-members of the SJA are welcome, and bookings for one of the Association’s best social events of the year are now open. We just hope that our golfers get better weather than they had to endure at our previous Golf Day, last September.
The SJA is delighted that hosting us on the day will be long-time member Chester Stern, who is Croham Hurst’s Captain for 2014.
Croham Hurst’s 18-hole, par 70 parkland course was designed by Fred Hawtree and five-time Open champion, James Braid and opened in 1911. From the south-facing clubhouse terrace, the course extends up a Surrey valley in a series of gently undulating loops. Every hole enjoys a private world of its own with the lush, springy fairways fringed by silver birch, beech and ancient oak.
For the SJA’s Spring Golf Day, coffee and bacon rolls will be served from 09.30am. The first tee-off time will be 10.30. Lunch will be served at 3.30pm. Lunch will consist of two courses – chicken, bacon, and leek pie with seasonal vegetables, and apple or rhubarb crumble and custard (cheese and biscuits can be provided for an additional £2). Vegetarian and gluten-free options are available on request. Chester Stern is generously providing wine at lunch.
All standards of golfer are welcome to attend this outstanding sporting and social occasion – and while we ask for your handicap, if you’ve only just started to play the game, we can still accommodate you. Some of us sports hacks are utter hackers on the golf course. Indeed, if you are considering becoming a member of the SJA, our Golf Day is a great opportunity to network and persuade you to sign up.
With the exception of your own drinks at the 19th hole, the day’s golf and meal will cost SJA members just £60 (£65 for non-members of the SJA).
Those non-golfers wishing to attend just the lunch may do so (at a cost of £15/£17 for SJA members/non-members); please notify Nick Cherrie by email below. Payments may be made on the day, either in cash or by cheque payable to Croham Hurst Golf Club. Applications to play should be received no later than Monday April 7.

As well as your name and SJA membership number, please provide detail of any special dietary requirements, and your golf handicap (if you don’t have one, just state so). If you book and do not show, you will be expected to pay.
