Sports Journalists’ Association annual meeting: April 13

The 2011 annual meeting of the Sports Journalists’ Association will be held in London on April 13.

Our long-time sponsors and supporters, UK Sport, have once again generously provided us with the venue for this event, at their headquarters at 40 Bernard St, London WC1N 1ST (opposite Russell Square Tube station).

Due to security requirements, members attending the annual meeting need to register in advance by emailing website@sportsjournalists.co.uk, with their name and membership number, writing “2011 AGM” in the subject field.

Entry to the meeting room will not begin until 12.30pm on the day.

The annual meeting is open to all fully paid-up members of the SJA. All members will have received a letter in the past couple weeks informing them of their subscription status.

This year’s agenda includes no proposals for the change of rules or constitution, and the business of the meeting will be to receive the committee’s annual report, the Treasurer’s annual report, and to elect the officers and committee for 2011-2012.

The officers standing for re-election are:

Chairman: Barry Newcombe

Vice-chairman: David Walker

Secretary: Steven Downes

Treasurer: Randall Northam

Membership secretary: Bill Colwill

Standing for election to the committee (eight places) are:

Ben Clissitt

Ian Cole

Mary Fitzhenry

Stuart Higgins

Mark Pain

Steve Rose

Janine Self

Howard Wheatcroft

These are important times for the Association, not least financially, following the loss of our long-term sponsors UK Sport.

With the London Olympics next year, it promises to be an exciting, if sometimes bumpy, ride for the committee, which has as new candidates Howard Wheatcroft, the sports editor of the Daily Star, Mark Pain, the sports photographer at the Mail on Sunday, Midlands football freelancer Janine Self, and former Sun editor now PR guru Stuart Higgins.

The officers hope as many members who are able to will attend the annual meeting, where drinks and a buffet lunch will be provided afterwards.
