The Association is delighted to announce the appointment as advisors of Silverman Sherliker, a law firm with a specialist sports and media unit, who will be providing regular updates on legal issues to our members and providing a legal helpline as an added benefit of membership.
The practice was founded in 1981, and advises a wide range of clients in a number of key industrial and commercial sectors. Their aim is to deliver comprehensive legal solutions in a cost effective and responsive manner.
The firm recognises that as the sport and entertainment industries are developing and inevitably becoming more commercialised, the need for good legal advice is important to capitalise on commercial opportunities.
The support unit is headed by Nick Jones, who enjoyed a successful tennis career being a former British champion and world ranked player, and coached top professional players including Jennifer Capriati and Tim Henman, before qualifying as a solicitor.
“With the constantly changing regulations and attitudes governing the sports industry, and athletes beginning to take an active interest in how they are portrayed in the media, it is necessary to be kept informed of the latest issues affecting athletes, management and subsidiary services such as media, journalists and broadcasters. For the athletes worried about how their image in the media to issues concerning broadcasting rights and advertising, it is necessary to be kept informed so as not to be left behind.”
As Jonathan Silverman, one of the founding partners of the practice, further commented,
“We understand the commercial realities of these industries and are therefore able to provide advice on a wide range of sports related issues.”
