Test your golf with the SJA in Wimbledon

The SJA is offering members, colleagues, friends and guests more fantastic value and a rare opportunity to play one of the best courses in London with our 2015 Spring Golf Day.

WPGC3The fairways – and perhaps some of the rough and bunkers – of Wimbledon Park Golf Club have already been graced by players of the calibre of Seve Ballesteros and Colin Montgomerie.

Those SJA members and guests who take part in our Golf Day there on Monday, April 13, may get the chance to play the challenging 117-year-old course before Ant and Dec’s membership applications get rubber-stamped.

Organiser Nick Cherrie has secured for us the use of Wimbledon Park Golf Club with the customary society day format of a morning start after coffee and bacon rolls, with 18 holes of golf, and all followed by a sociable three-course lunch.

Wimbledon Park GC is one of suburban London’s most exclusive courses, located next to the All-England Lawn Tennis Club.

SJA members of all golfing standards are welcome to play, as are guests and non-members. Bookings for one of the Association’s best social events of the year are now open.

Simply playing a round of golf at WPGC would usually cost £70, but we are delighted to offer our full Spring Golf Day package to SJA members for just £60 – and even your drinks at the 19th hole are reasonably priced, too.

Non-members of the SJA get money off, too, if they book to play with us: the cost to them for our Golf Day, including the lunch, is £65.

WPGCLocated within 400 yards of the nearest Tube station (Wimbledon Park, on the District line), the clubhouse is also in easy reach of the A3 and M25 for those travelling by car. Designed by Willie Park Jnr and opened in 1898, the course is set around a lake and is unusual in having no Par 5 holes. The challenging layout has plenty of trees and six very tough par 3s and some long par 4s that will test your long-iron play.

For the SJA’s Spring Golf Day, coffee and bacon rolls will be served from 9.30am. The first tee-off time will be 10.30. Lunch will be served at 3.30pm. Lunch will consist of two courses. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are available on request.

All standards of golfer are welcome to attend this outstanding sporting and social occasion – and while we ask for your handicap, if you’ve only just started to play the game, we can still accommodate you. Some of us sports hacks are utter hackers on the golf course. Indeed, if you are considering becoming a member of the SJA, our Golf Day is a great opportunity to network and persuade you to sign up.

Payments may be made on the day, either in cash or by cheque. Applications to play should be received no later than Monday April 6.

To book your place, as a member, a guest or as a lunch attendee, please email Nick Cherrie at nick.cherrie@sundaymirror.co.uk, writing “Spring Golf Day” in the subject field.

As well as your name and SJA membership number, please provide detail of any special dietary requirements, and your golf handicap (if you don’t have one, just state so). If you book and do not show, you will be expected to pay.

  • As is now tradition, the SJA’s Autumn Golf Day, when the Phil Sheldon Trophy will be contested, will be held at Muswell Hill GC in north London, this year on September 14. Booking will be accepted in due course.

All details are subject to change.
