Wisden puts magazine up for sale

Monthly magazine The Wisden Cricketer has been put up for sale by the Wisden group, owned by the Getty family, which publishes the world famous cricketing almanac.

Wisden has decided to concentrate its efforts for future growth on cricket website Cricinfo.

The publisher will also retain its books business, including the Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack, and Cricinfo magazine, published in India.

Wisden has appointed financial advisers to oversee a potential sale of Wisden Cricketer and The Oldie magazine, which it is also selling.

Wisden Cricketer was formed in 2003 from the merger of Wisden Cricket Monthly and The Cricketer magazines. It has a monthly circulation of 36,000.

The Wisden publishing company, founded to publish the almanac by John Wisden in 1864, was bought in 1993 by the late Paul Getty, a noted philanthropist and cricket lover.
