Ex-Sunday Mirror sports editor Tony Smith has died

Tony Smith, the former sports editor of the Sunday Mirror, has died. He was 81.

Smith died on Wednesday at his Surrey home following a long illness.

His funeral will be at St Peter’s Church, Woodmansterne, at 12.30 on Wednesday July 23, with a wake at the Oaks Golf Club nearby.

Tony was one of the most popular and respected sports editors at Mirror Newspapers in the “golden days” of the 1960s and 1970s.

There will be a full tribute from Norman Giller in his column next week, with a contribution from Tony’s long-time deputy, Dave Ellis.
